I’m Marlee, born & raised in Grand Rapids, MI where I currently live with my husband John and our backyard chickens.  After receiving my BFA in Dance from the University of Michigan I decided to head back to my hometown to sift through the pieces and figure out what was next.  I started with an internship with The Market (The Avenue for the Arts outdoor craft & art market) and by July of 2013 I had my very own shop on the Avenue! Right now the focus of my creative practice is on improvisation in quilting, dance making, and day to day living.

I started this blog to exist alongside my shop of the same name.  This is a space that lends itself to promoting the work of the makers we carry in our shop, a peak into my home studio & creative practice, the occasional DIY tutorial, and more!  I work alongside creatives to help build their brand, develop products, and help them to promote themselves through social media and word of mouth.  This blog is yet another springboard to leap from. Dive in!

Have Company is a general store & small publication shop specializing in local handmade goods, small publications, & working together.  We are located at 136 Division Avenue in Grand Rapids, MI.  The shop is owned and curated by myself with the help & careful eye of my husband John Hanson, succulent enthusiast Kate Vlaming, and many more helping hands!

We host a domestic residency in the back of the shop where artists come to LIVE and work in the space!  They have their own apartment, studio space, and kitchen.  While artists are with us they teach workshops, host gatherings, and work on a proposed project of their choosing!  Learn more and apply to be one of our artists in residence this spring!

    hello marlee!

i happened upon your website because my friend aliya posted news of her upcoming residency at have company. i found myself browsing your links as well as john’s pictures for quite some time. i just wanted to write and say hello, and to share how inspired i am feeling as a result of seeing all that you’re up to, and the creative community it seems you are a part of // helping to sustain. i dance, write poetry, take pictures, and make videos, collage & sound art, so it’s lovely to see an integration of many artistic pusuits in your shop // practice. i hope that i’ll be able to come visit in person someday. keep up the good work!

    yours truly,
